My Monday Thoughts: Introduction

What is My Monday Thoughts: Introduction

So, I wanted a space to share my thoughts throughout our farm journey —and what better way than to start a blog! Even though we started our journey last year, things are starting to pick up, and sharing what we are going through with you all without all the fluff is exactly what I want to do.

Our First Sale:

A lot has happened to bring us to this point, and I mean the point of making our first official sale! Even though it was only one dozen eggs for $4.oo, it still felt amazing! With all the videos and everything showing people they can make a lot of money starting in farming, it was quite a disappointment to learn that there’s a lot more to it than what is led on.

It could be our choices about what to start with, or our marketing, but the more I speak to other small farmers like us, the more the story stays the same. Lots of time and money later, they made their first sale. If you are finding yourself in that same position, do not beat yourself up. Starting a farm from the bottom up takes a lot of grit to get to the point of making your first sale.

How We Decided On Poultry:

Honestly, my husband Jason and I always pictured ourselves having a farm, but more from a self-sufficiency standpoint. So, we bought our first five hens as day-old chicks. Then, chicken math hit us, and we started buying more and more. We went from just chickens to turkeys, quail, ducks, and even rabbits. The more we spoke with locals and farmers, the more we realized there was a need for more small farmers and others to help the community address unmet needs.

In our county, we discovered that when we tried to find some local eggs and chicken meat, there was none. None that we could see easily online. That’s when we had a discussion and realized our county, although famous for its tomatoes, did not have easily accessible farms where we could get what we needed. I knew that with my skill set and my husband Jason’s, we could change that! So, we decided to start our poultry farm!

What We Think Our Future Will Look Like for The Farm:

We are still pretty early in our journey and are experimenting to figure out what we really love to do! Don’t worry, our eggs will not disappear, as that is one thing we know we love to do. We will be trying our hand at meat birds here soon, like turkeys for Thanksgiving! Ideally, we would love to start a farm stand soon to make it easier for our consumers to access.

Also, we are looking forward to next spring, when we will begin hatching eggs! We have realized we do love the entire process — from gathering eggs to watching them hatch and grow! Who knows precisely what the future will bring, but we do know this is a lifestyle we have dreamed of for so long.

Conclusion: Where I Hope This Blog Will Go

As I wrap up this Monday Thoughts Introduction, I’m reminded of just how far our little farm has already come — and how much more there is to share. What started as a simple idea to document our weekly experiences is quickly becoming something I truly look forward to: a space where I can slow down, reflect, and bring others along on this journey with us.

My hope is that this blog grows into more than just updates. I want it to become a place where people can learn, laugh, and even find a bit of inspiration. A place where I can talk honestly about the hard days, celebrate the wins (big and small), and shine a light on the everyday beauty of raising animals and running a small farm. Over time, I imagine these posts expanding into helpful guides, personal stories, behind-the-scenes looks, and maybe even resources for others who dream of doing something similar.

Most of all, I hope this blog becomes a connection point — a way for our customers, friends, and fellow farmers to follow along with what we’re building here at Little Yardley Farm. I’m excited to see how this grows and where it leads, and I’m grateful to have you here for the beginning of it all.

Here’s to many more of My Monday Thoughts!

With Love,

Jennifer Yardley
